Arbor Day Wood-Ridge, NJ
April 23, 2015 - Doyle School

On April 23, 2015, Wood-Ridge Shade Tree Commission and Mayor and Council celebrated Arbor Day at the Doyle School with the third grade students.

Arbor Day is a national observance that celebrates the importance of trees and promotes tree planting and care. First celebrated in 1872, it was established as a way to encourage farmers and homesteaders to plant trees that would provide shade, shelter, food, fuel, and beauty to open areas. In New York, Arbor Day is held on the last Friday in April.

Councilman Romero stated "Trees are essential to a healthy environment, helping provide clean air and creating a rich aesthetic for all. They are vital to our economy and contribute greatly to our everyday lives by providing paper for writing, lumber for the homes in which we live, maple syrup and fruit products, decorations during the holidays, improving air quality, and adding beauty to attract new business and tourism to our great state".

Councilmen Altamura went on to say "Unlike other holidays, many of which honor people or past events, Arbor Day looks to the future. Young people are our future foresters and leaders. This day reminds us to share our knowledge of the importance of trees and how to care for them with the youth of today".

Mr. Albro, Vice Principal has lead the Arbor Day celebration for the last three years, the entire Shade Tree Commission and Mayor and Council thank him for his continued support of this tree celebration.
